Cow magnets to increase gas mileage

Being from a rural area, I received all kinds of homespun tips for getting more miles per gallon. When gas was under 30 cents a gallon many years ago, you’d think that the low price wouldn’t warrant the need to save at all, but then the minimum wage was hovering at about $2 per hour. Fast-forward to today, your minimum wage would have to be in excess of $20 per hour to afford the same amount of gasoline. And, today we drive our cars and trucks a lot more than back then.

One of my favorite mileage boosters was the Cow Magnet. I had no way of doing a real test with my old Dodge, so I really can’t say if it was effective.

So what is a Cow Magnet and how is it used?

A typical cow magnet is about 3 inches long and a half-inch in diameter. Some are single smooth magnets and some have up to 5 ceramic magnets.

On a farm, cow magnets are are used to protect the cow’s digestive system from metal objects the cow might ingest while grazing. The magnets are fed to the cow early on and can remain in the cow indefinitely. See the wiki on Cow Magnets.

On a car, the cow magnet is attached to the fuel line near the carburator. It is theorized that the magnet affects the molecular structure of the fuel, causing a more efficient combustion, thus better gas mileage. Your mileage may vary.
